Operational amplifiers are nonlinear electronic circuits which are used to perform signal amplification. When you use a nonlinear circuit, you can exploit its characteristics to make it perform certain operations such as multiplication, division, and inversion. Nonlinear amplification is generally slower than linear amplification but they are also more accurate.
A nonlinear amplifier is called an “operational amplifier”. One way of thinking about an operational amplifier is as a circuit with a resistor as the input, a capacitor as the output, and a multiplier circuit (summing amplifier) between them. Thus, the characteristic equation for an operational amplifier can be written:
Vout = Cx/R + K(Vin – Vo)
This is, in effect, a multiplication and it is quite simple to realize.
The advantage of an operational amplifier is that it performs amplification well but it does so by using a multiplier. In digital circuit design, multiplication can be very slow.
In the past, it was not possible to design a nonlinear circuit. Amplification could be performed by a linear circuit which was added in series with a resistor, but this meant that all the gain was lost. With the operational amplifier, the amplification is performed by the multiplier circuit in the operational amplifier so that all of the gain is retained.
Amplifiers that are designed by nonlinear methods usually are slower than linear amplifiers, but because they can be nonlinear, they can have an increased precision. In addition, they can also be nonlinear over a larger voltage range than a linear amplifier.

I’m talking about Christianity specifically.
This is often discussed on Stack Exchange, but I think this question is more interesting than the others, since it is about the supposed authority of Scripture.
If I am understanding things correctly, the most important word in Christianity is the word of God.
