How to Recover (Fix) a Lost Password on a Hard Drive Description:
Have you just discovered that your computer has a lost or forgotten password?
If you’re using Windows Vista, you have a few options to try to reset or recover the password. You’ll find out how to regain access to a lost or forgotten Windows Vista password, and even one from an earlier version of Windows.
First, if you have a laptop, you’ll want to turn off your computer and immediately open the case. Once the computer is open, plug in an external hard drive. You may see this hard drive as a fixed drive.
Second, start Windows Vista again, but this time, the login screen will be shown. You can choose to start with your saved logon and password or create a new logon and password. You can also change your security settings, or you can just reboot the computer.
It’s important to save any important files that you may have been working on before you log off. You can’t use your saved passwords to log on. If you do want to save your files, you’ll need to access the startup menu to do so.
If you’re using Windows XP, there are ways to access the settings that you need to access to change the password on your Windows XP PC. You’ll need to log off, log back on, and access the same Windows XP menu that you would find if you were logging on to Windows Vista. You can then select the “Startup and recovery” tab, and choose “Recover a forgotten Windows password.”
If you decide to use the backup that you have on your hard drive, you may be able to recover your password.
